History

The origins of yoga are lost in the sands of time, but there is a common thread that we know in the timeline of the civilizations of ancient Egypt and the ancient Harappa Civilization of the Indus Valley of India. The first evidence of yoga is found in the steatites showing yoga asanas at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, dated at around the same time the Great Pyramid was built, around 2560 BCE.

Five years ago, we came full circle in this timeline, when the Egypt First International Yoga Festival was held in March 2006 at El Gouna, Red Sea. This was the first time a yoga festival had been held in Egypt, and anywhere in the Middle East, and it was a great success!

Dr. Hossam Darwish has been the chief organizer of this event since its inception. The festival was opened by His Excellency A. Gopinathan, Ambassador of India to Egypt. It was embraced, supported, and well attended by people from many countries.

The successful track record has continued, with the Egypt Second International Yoga Festival held in March 2007 at the Pyramids at Giza, and Taba Heights, Sinai Peninsula. It was also a great success, with Lama Tensing Yignyen, famed Bansuri Master G.S. Sachdev, many great yoga teachers, and again, well attended by people from many countries.

The Egypt Third International Yoga Festival was held 30 May to June 7, 2008, organized between Egypt and Jordan, with the theme ‘The Wonders of the World Peace Pilgrimage: From Giza to Petra’. This festival was also a great success, with people attending from many countries.

The Egypt Fourth International Yoga Festival was held April 2010, organized between Egypt and Lebanon. The theme was ‘Love between the Mother of the World, Egypt, and the Grandmother of the World, Lebanon’. Again, this festival was a success, with many people attending from different countries.

The Present

The Egypt Fifth International Yoga Festival will be held 26 April 2012 – 01 May 2012. We are excited to present this fifth international yoga festival, and we think it will surpass all the others from our successful past.

It will be held at the Domina Coral group of hotels at the beach at Sharm el-Sheikh, Red Sea.

Our theme this year is ‘Egypt Back to Freedom’, which is the highest goal of yoga, freedom – Kaivalya – and also for the freedom of the people of Egypt, following their successful revolution in February 2011.

It is time of new beginnings, new opportunities for prosperity and growth.

What we will do and who can come

The Yoga Festival is an event for yoga enthusiasts of all levels and traditions. Beginner classes give a gentle introduction to easy yoga that anyone can do. Strong dynamic yoga classes challenge the more experienced practitioners. In Akro Yoga, Partner Yoga and Thai Yoga Massage you explore fun and supportive ways to do yoga with others. We have interesting workshops for both new and experienced practitioners, workshops that teach techniques to open up and relax. Our most experienced teachers take you into new yoga experiences where you connect with your body’s own intelligence, discovering new ways of finding optimal alignment, enhancing your natural fitness and aliveness.

Levels and experience

The Yoga classes are designed to be for both you who are beginners and the more experienced. Dance Classes require no previous experience, and are designed to help you focus on connecting with your body, inner being and the joy of movement.

Bring your own mat. We suggest an ecologically friendly mat that does not use PVC.
